"Manuscripts relating to the early history of the Western Reserve, 1795-1869, consists of business records, government documents, land surveys and field notes, journals and diaries, correspondence, writings, statements, addresses, newspaper clippings, court proceedings, and notes. Many of the documents in the collection are not originals but transcripts collected by John Barr and Charles Whittlesey during the period 1840-1860. The collection is arranged in seven series: Connecticut Land Company records; land surveys, field notes, and plats; journals and diaries; correspondence; writings; court cases; and miscellaneous.

The Connecticut Land Company (1795-1809) was a syndicate of 35 groups representing 58 individuals who purchased on credit the majority of Connecticut's Western Reserve land as a speculative venture. Proceeds from the sale of the Reserve were used to establish the Connecticut School Fund.
